Some lippy DIY!

Lip products are something I go gaga about, and I love trying different shades and colours in not just lipsticks but lip balms too. But a lot of lip products contain harmful ingredients like petroleum, parabens, synthetic colours and carcinogenic substances. Lip balms are supposed to care for your lips, but the point ceases when lip balms have such damaging constituents. So I looked up some organic lip balm recipes and made my own. Read on to see how I made it!

Ingredients required

Beeswax pastilles-Beeswax contains natural moisturisers, which help retain moisture in the skin. It also helps prevent chapping of the lips, and slows down the ageing of lips.

Avocado oil- This is one of the most popular ingredients used to make lip balms. It helps restore the pink colour of the lips and to keep it smooth

Pomegranate oil- This has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This helps in nourishing the lips and recovery of damaged lips.

Shea butter- This is loaded with Vitamin F, which helps in maintaining the elasticity and retaining moisture of the lips. This makes sure your lips stay hydrated all time.

Cinnamon oil- Ladies, this one is for you! The secret ingredient used in lip plumpers, which causes the plump in the lips, is cinnamon oil.

P.S. Avocado and pomegranate oils are carrier oils while cinnamon oil used is in its purest form.

Method

I heated the beeswax pastilles using the double boiler method, ensuring that the ratio of the pastilles to the carrier oils to Shea butter was kept at 1:2:1. Once the beeswax melted, I added Shea butter, and then added the other oils. I stirred until they were all blended, and then added a few drops of cinnamon oil. Then, I poured them into some containers I had and let it cool. Voila, lip balm ready!

Since I wanted one with colour as well, I used Alkanet root. Alkanet root can be found in local apothecaries or online.  Just soak the Alkanet root in the carrier oils beforehand and leave it under sunlight for a day, for the colour to sink in. This gives a faint red tint. The longer you leave the Alkanet root in oil, the darker the tint is.

The lip balm feels great on my lips, the beeswax forms a good sheath and the benefits of the other oils are great. This is one easy DIY recipe! Do you have any other recipes for making lip balms at home? Do leave your comments!

Until next time,

Aishu
